Overall, I was very satisfied.If you’d like to know more, read on.Our initial situation:We were already at the Hotel RIU, not far from Girassol’s main office in Canico. There was a Hertz QR code display at the hotel. Unfortunately, everything was fully booked. I didn’t want to go back to the airport, so I searched the surrounding area and found Girassol.Let’s start with the online booking: Unfortunately, the vehicles were fully booked. Finding a suitable time slot with a free vehicle at all was a bit time-consuming. You have to enter the desired rental period exactly, only to find that—as in our case—none of the vehicles are available. This requires some patience and several attempts. It would be better to be able to see the available time slots. This would make it easier to find a free slot.Collecting the vehicle:We rented a Seat Ibiza from Girassol. The vehicle was a 2025 model and in good condition. Freshly vacuumed and washed. We went through any imperfections that were invisible at first glance with Girassol, or rather, they were pointed out to us.To best avoid any problems (something like that certainly spoils the holiday mood and wastes unnecessary time), we opted for the additional insurance. There’s no deposit and no deductible in the event of damage.The return:Although we were very careful, the vehicle was, of course, not as clean upon return as it had been upon collection. There was some dust from the Pico do Arieiro and a few light spots, possibly from one of the trees on the side of the road under which I had once parked. They resemble resin. I was worried that this might cause problems upon return. We didn’t cause any scratches, etc.I then returned the car with a full tank as agreed. A quick check by Girassol – everything was OK.My conclusion:I was very satisfied and would rent a vehicle from Girassol again at any time. Perhaps the online booking process has improved somewhat by then.

We took some photos, described the situation, and the company handled everything.I also saw someone hit another car in the parking lot and just leave without saying anything. We met with 2 different members of staff during our stay in Madeira and both were incredibly helpful.Rita was particularly amazing, and helped provide us with a 2023 Seat Ibiza automatic for the day. The car was amazing, very smooth and faultless. I would definitely recommend using this company as the cars are automatic, and some of the hills in the area are very steep and would be challenging in a manual.My boyfriend and I are only 19 (both have 2 years driving experience + no claims), and we were both keen to see more of the island. However, we struggled at other rental companies who would not supply to us. Girassol were very helpful, and only added on a small extra fee of around €6 for being young drivers. Another company on the same street asked for €500 deposit which was not something we were willing to pay.Overall, the staff were friendly and incredibly helpful. The cars on offer were all a very high standard (new cars). I have to be honest, choosing the cheapest company is not what I normally do as they tend to be cheap for a reason.However Girassol have been absolutely brilliant, which to be honest, is quite rare with car rental companies in general from my experience.From the ease of booking with Vlad and Alberto on hand to sort anything out, they really have been a great company and would use them again.If you have any issues, they respond on What’s app quickly.The car was a Seat Ibiza, Auto and was presented cleaned and with a full tank.Now tips for UK drivers coming to Madeira and driving for the first time.Locals: They know the roads, you don’t.Don’t hog the fast lane as they will not just be up your backside on the main roads, they will be so close, you won’t see their headlights.They tend to be BMW, Audi and have crap spoilers on their cars, or lowered.Roundabouts: They’re different to the UK.Unless you’re taking the first turn off, don’t stay in the outside lane.Soon as you enter the roundabout, go to the inside and they filter off on your turn. It sounds odd, but is better than the UK system.Slips Road: or more so lack of the slip road.Don’t think every slip road joining a A-road type will have one. Some times they are just like a giveaway junction and it’s weird.Sat Nav: Your Sat Nat will do it’s best to torture you and send you up 30-40 degree village passes where you will learn the width of your car quickly and what a drop off verge looks like.Stay on ER roads, they may be a little longer but easier.Finally, use Girassol as they offer Auto’s only.Truest me, a manual clutch here is pointless unless you just love hill starts and burning clutches out.

Having looked at various options in Madeira, I took a chance on this one based on other reviews I’d found and popped in to the office in Canico. I was warmly greeted by a very helpful and courteous lady, who went through the options available. I collected the car the next day, an immaculately presented Seat Ibiza, which served me perfectly for the next three days. The car came full of fuel, and I simply had to return it filled to the same level, which was easily done at the local Repsol garage where the staff (like most on Madeira), spoke perfect English. The return process was simple, honest and friendly, taking only 2 minutes to check the car over. I will definitely use this company again in future visits to the island. Advisable to pre-book as undoubtedly a company with this profile will be in demand, but always worth dropping in in person even if (as was the case for me) the website suggested nothing was available. The staff have more ability to “fine tune” things to meet your needs if you’re able to be a little flexible.

Greeting! I thought others might be interested in my Madeira rental experience. First of all, a cheap car is not always a good choice. He brought it to us in such a way that we didn’t have the basic cars left, but in the end we didn’t mind at all. Full insurance is not provided in very few places, even though they say it is, but there is no damage to the glass (a pebble can hit the windshield at any moment), the cheaply rented car will be very expensive. At Girassol, we rented a small diesel BMW and it may suddenly seem expensive, but it is sold with comprehensive actual insurance. On these roads, small gasoline cars are weak and consume much more if we want to approach mountain tours.I recommend this rental company, we have visited all of them in the area. For a two-day trip across the beautiful island of Madeira, we looked for inexpensive car rental companies in our hotel and in the surrounding area. This is where I came across the Girassol car rental company. The website is also available in German and so I texted the number via WhatsApp, as offered on the website. I received an answer within a few minutes and two offers have already been sent to me via WhatsApp. I then reserved a rental car for the next day on the same day and paid for it straight away. Unfortunately, due to my last-minute decision, there was “only” a Seat Arona available, which would actually have been too big for me and my girlfriend. However, as a last resort, we took advantage of this offer and picked it up the next day. The vehicle was in new condition due to the 2600 km it had on the clock at the time. No scratches, no dents and no stains on the interior. All vehicles from this car rental company are automatic transmissions, including this one. This paid off after just a few hundred meters through the steep streets of this island. The car was easy to maneuver on the narrow roads and the average consumption was around 8 liters per 100 km. Despite the island’s extreme topography, this is very low consumption. After the rental period, I brought the car back with around 350 km more and the rental lady looked at the car again. Explaining the contract, signing it and returning the vehicle only took around 10-15 minutes. All the employees I spoke to spoke good English and some also good German. All in all, I had a quick transaction, a top vehicle, top employees and no hidden costs. If I go on holiday to Madeira again, I will get a rental car from Girassol again.
