When to Book Car Hire in Madeira: Seasons, Prices and Timing
If you plan to explore Madeira by car, booking at the right moment gives you more choice and helps you plan your transport budget.
As a practical starting point, allow 4-8 weeks for peak dates and major festivals, 3-5 weeks for a typical shoulder-season trip, and 1-3 weeks for a quieter stay with flexible plans. These are planning guidelines, not guarantees of availability. If you need a particular model or your dates are fixed, check sooner rather than waiting until the end of the suggested window.
Early booking does not automatically mean the lowest price. Its main advantage is having more time to find a suitable car, compare the full cost and understand the terms before confirming.

How seasonality affects car hire in Madeira
Madeira is a year-round destination, but particular car categories can become harder to secure during busy periods. Availability always depends on your actual dates.
Girassol.Rent’s seasonal rate calendar, current as at 20 October 2026 and applicable to bookings for 2027, uses the following bands:
| Seasonal band | Dates | Adjustment to the base vehicle hire rate |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest seasonal band | 15 January-10 March; 16 November–15 December | -20.45% |
| Lower seasonal band | 8-14 January; 11-24 March; 1-15 November; 16-23 December | -7.5% |
| Base rate | 24 December-7 January; 25 March-30 April; 16 September-31 October | 0% |
| Higher seasonal band | 1 May-30 June; 1-15 September | +12.5% |
| Highest seasonal band | 1 July-31 August | +20% |
These percentages are seasonal adjustments to the base vehicle hire rate for the relevant category and rental duration, not discounts on the entire booking total. The daily rate also depends on how long you hire the car: compare the row for your full rental duration, not the one-day rate.

Our price list rarely changes from year to year, although seasonal boundaries or promotional periods may change. Check the current quote before confirming.
Seasonal rates and availability are different things. A lower-rate period can still include a popular festival weekend, while Christmas and New Year fall within the base-rate band despite being important dates for advance planning.

What if your hire crosses two seasonal periods?
The booking system calculates each part of the hire using the applicable seasonal rate, while keeping the full rental duration as the basis for the duration bracket.
For example, if you hire a car for ten days and four days fall in the high season, those four days use the high-season daily rate for a ten-day hire. If the remaining six days fall in the low season, they use the low-season daily rate for a ten-day hire. The booking is not treated as two separate rentals of four and six days.
In that example, the vehicle hire charge is:
4 × the high-season ten-day daily rate + 6 × the low-season ten-day daily rate.
Compare the total for your whole stay, including any optional cover, equipment, collection or delivery charges and applicable fees, rather than judging the booking by a single advertised daily price.

When should you start looking?
These are practical recommendations, not measured fleet occupancy statistics.
| Travel plans | Suggested time to start comparing options |
|---|---|
| Christmas and New Year | 4-8 weeks ahead |
| July and August | 4-8 weeks ahead |
| Carnival, Flower Festival and Easter holidays | 4-8 weeks ahead |
| A major festival or sporting event that your trip is organised around | 4-8 weeks ahead; check sooner if you need a particular model |
| Typical shoulder-season trip outside major event dates | 3-5 weeks ahead |
| Quieter period with flexible dates and vehicle choice | 1-3 weeks ahead, recognising that choice may be more limited |
For festival trips, start around ten weeks ahead if your flights are fixed or you prefer a particular model. Flexible vehicle preferences give you more options, but do not guarantee last-minute availability.
Use these windows to start comparing options. Once your dates are fixed and you find a suitable car, review the booking and cancellation terms before confirming.

Peak periods and festival dates to consider
Christmas and New Year
Madeira’s Christmas and New Year festivities run from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Funchal’s lights, celebrations and New Year’s Eve fireworks make this an important period to plan ahead.
Early December may offer more flexibility than the main Christmas and New Year holiday dates. The full festive programme is not one uniform demand peak.
July and August
These are core summer holiday months for many European travellers and coincide with Girassol.Rent’s highest seasonal rate band. If flights and accommodation are fixed, start comparing cars 4-8 weeks ahead, particularly if you prefer a specific model.
Carnival, Easter and the Flower Festival
Spring brings holiday travel and major events, but the dates change each year. For 2027, the currently published programmes include:
- Carnival: 3–14 February, with allegorical parades on 5 and 6 February.
- Flower Festival: 29 April–30 May, with allegorical parades on 2 and 16 May.
Allow 4-8 weeks for comparing options if your stay coincides with these festivals or Easter holidays. Check the official programme again before travelling, as schedules may change.
An event does not automatically mean higher prices or sold-out vehicles. Check earlier if your trip centres on a parade or event weekend, without treating every smaller event as an island-wide demand peak.

Online choice, confirmed availability and Girassol.Rent’s approach
A fleet catalogue shows the vehicles a company offers; it does not necessarily show which are available for your exact dates. Use a date-specific availability search and check whether the reservation confirms a particular vehicle or a category.
Overbooking means accepting more reservations than can be fulfilled with the vehicles available for the relevant period. A large catalogue alone is not evidence of overbooking, and a replacement car can also be necessary for other reasons.
Girassol.Rent does not use overbooking. Our booking process is based on the vehicles actually available in our fleet for your selected dates. Your specific car is confirmed and reserved when you make the 15% booking prepayment.
If a rare replacement becomes necessary, our manager contacts you to explain and agree the arrangements. Where possible, we try to match the original make and colour as well as your practical needs, without guaranteeing an identical replacement.
You can browse our fleet and check date-specific availability on the online booking page.
Why automatic cars and extra equipment are worth planning ahead
An automatic can make Madeira’s steep and winding roads more comfortable to navigate. Girassol.Rent’s entire fleet is automatic, but check early if you prefer a particular model.
Consider passengers and luggage together. A compact car may suit a couple with modest luggage, while a family or travellers carrying bulky equipment may need more space. Our guide to the best car for Madeira’s roads compares the options.
If you need a roof-mounted surfboard carrier, request it before or during booking so we can confirm availability and prepare it. This equipment is available only for Seat Arona vehicles in the Girassol.Rent fleet and is not automatically included with every booking.

Booking prepayment, cancellation and flight delays
Before paying, distinguish the booking prepayment from any security deposit. The 15% booking prepayment reserves your chosen car. A security deposit relates to the damage excess and is a separate matter governed by your selected cover and rental conditions.
If your plans change and you cancel more than 48 hours before the rental starts, we refund your 15% booking prepayment, less only the payment provider’s processing fee. Girassol.Rent does not charge its own cancellation fee or retain any compensation in this situation. The processing fee varies by payment provider; contact us if you would like to confirm the deduction that applies to your payment.
If you need to cancel or amend your booking at short notice, contact us as soon as possible so we can explain the arrangements that apply to your reservation. Review the booking terms before confirming and ask us about anything that is unclear.
If your rental starts on your arrival day, provide your flight number in the booking comments or by email. If your flight is delayed or Madeira Airport closes, contact us so we can discuss collection arrangements.

A short checklist before confirming
- Car and dates: check the selected model, transmission, collection and return times.
- Total cost: review the full rental quote, selected cover, extras and applicable charges.
- Payments: check the 15% prepayment and when the remaining balance is due.
- Cancellation and changes: check the refund arrangements and payment-provider fee, and ask what applies if you need to cancel or change your booking at short notice.
- Arrival: provide your flight number where relevant and know how to contact us.
- Cover and security deposit: review the excess, exclusions and any deposit requirement.
- Equipment: request a surfboard carrier or other required equipment in advance and confirm availability.

Winter car hire in Madeira
Winter can be an appealing time to visit. Girassol.Rent’s lowest seasonal rate windows run from 15 January to 10 March and from 16 November to 15 December. However, Christmas, New Year and Carnival need separate consideration when planning availability.
The weather is generally milder than in much of northern Europe, but conditions can change between coastal areas and higher elevations. Rain, cloud and reduced visibility may affect driving, particularly in the mountains.
Allow extra time for journeys and check the forecast and current road conditions before setting out. Our essential road safety tips for driving in Madeira provide further advice.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book a hire car in Madeira?
Start comparing options 4-8 weeks ahead for July and August, Christmas and New Year, major festivals and Easter holidays. For an ordinary shoulder-season trip, 3-5 weeks is a practical starting point; for a quieter stay with flexible dates and vehicle choice, 1-3 weeks may work. Check sooner if you need a particular model.
Can I hire a car in Madeira at the last minute?
Yes, if a suitable vehicle is available. A quieter period may offer more flexibility, but last-minute availability is not guaranteed. If your dates are fixed, there is little reason to delay checking options simply because a fleet catalogue shows plenty of models.
Does booking early guarantee a cheaper price?
No. Early booking mainly helps you secure a suitable available car and compare the terms without rushing. The price depends on the applicable seasonal band, vehicle, full rental duration and selected services.
Are car hire prices lower in winter?
Girassol.Rent’s lowest vehicle hire rate bands apply from 15 January to 10 March and from 16 November to 15 December. They do not cover every winter date, and the final booking total also depends on your vehicle, duration and extras.
When is my specific car confirmed?
At Girassol.Rent, your selected car is confirmed and reserved when you make the 15% booking prepayment. We do not use overbooking. If a rare forced replacement becomes necessary, our manager contacts you to discuss and agree the arrangements.
Is the 15% booking prepayment refundable?
Yes. If you cancel more than 48 hours before the rental starts, we refund your booking prepayment less only the payment provider’s processing fee. Girassol.Rent does not charge its own cancellation fee or retain compensation in this situation. For a short-notice cancellation, contact us to confirm the arrangements for your booking.
Can I request a surfboard carrier?
Yes. Request it before or during booking so availability can be confirmed and the equipment prepared. Roof-mounted surfboard carriers are available only for Seat Arona vehicles in our fleet.
