How to Hire a Car in Madeira 2026

How to Hire a Car in Madeira: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide

Madeira is an island best explored at your own pace, and for most visitors that means a hire car. The process itself is straightforward, but a handful of small decisions — when you book, what documents you bring, where you collect the vehicle, and which insurance level you choose — make the difference between a five-minute handover and a frustrating start to your holiday. This guide walks through each step in order, from booking to drop-off, so you know exactly what to expect before you land.

Hire a Car in Madeira

Why most visitors end up hiring a car on Madeira

Madeira is compact, but it is not flat. The island’s public transport network covers the main towns along the south coast reasonably well, yet it thins out quickly once you head towards the levadas, the miradouros in the central mountains, or the smaller villages on the north coast. Buses run on their own schedule, and a return journey from a trailhead or a viewpoint can mean a long wait or a long walk back to the nearest stop.

A hire car removes that constraint entirely. You can start early to beat the cloud that often builds over the peaks by mid-morning, linger at a viewpoint without watching the clock, and change your plans on the day if the weather on one side of the island looks better than the other. For a week-long stay that includes anything beyond Funchal’s hotel zone, a car is less a luxury and more a practical tool for actually seeing the island.

It is also worth saying plainly: this does not mean every visitor needs one for every day. Some travellers hire a car for three or four days in the middle of a longer stay, using taxis or organised tours for the rest. Both approaches work — the point is to decide deliberately rather than default into a rental you will not use fully, or skip one you will end up needing.

When to book, and how far in advance

Madeira’s hire-car market tightens considerably in peak periods. Automatic cars in particular can sell out several weeks ahead simply because the island’s total fleet is smaller than in mainland tourist destinations.

As a general rule:

  • Peak periods (Christmas/New Year, Easter, July–August and major festivals): book 6–10 weeks ahead.
  • Shoulder periods: 3–5 weeks is usually comfortable.
  • Quieter months: 1–3 weeks is often enough, though a specific model is never guaranteed.

Booking early does more than protect availability — it also tends to secure a better rate.

Current seasons and rates at Girassol.Rent (prices include 22 % VAT)

Our price list changes only rarely (last major update 15 May 2024). Base daily rates for Economy cars (Seat Ibiza, Nissan Micra, Mazda 2 Hybrid) start from €32 in the standard high season and drop significantly for longer rentals and quieter periods. Compact SUV (Seat Arona 1.0 TSI) rates are higher.

A 15 % prepayment made on our website at the moment of booking locks the specific vehicle you selected — colour and registration plate included. We do not practise overbooking. In 99 % of cases you receive exactly the car shown on the website. Replacements happen only in rare force-majeure situations, and we always provide an equivalent or better model.

Rental periods run from 1 day up to 90 days — the legal maximum for a single rental contract under Portuguese law. Longer stays can be arranged through a contract extension.

Documents you will need

Hire-car paperwork in Portugal is fairly standard, but a few details catch visitors out.

  • A valid driving licence held for at least two years before the start of the rental (firm local legal requirement).
  • Age 20–80 at Girassol.Rent. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge of €10 per day.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) if your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA and is not in Latin script or falls outside mutual-recognition rules. Most UK licences are currently accepted without an IDP, but check a few weeks before travel.
  • Credit or debit card in the lead driver’s name (we also accept cash at collection).
  • Passport or national ID matching the booking name.
  • Booking confirmation (printed or on your phone).

Any additional driver must be registered before collection, meet the same age and experience rules, and pay a fixed one-time fee of €11.50. Registering additional drivers at the time of booking is the smoothest option.

Any question about documents, ages or surcharges can be checked quickly by phone, WhatsApp or Telegram on +351 961 778 886.

Airport, hotel or office collection

Most companies offer airport and city pick-up. Hotel delivery is also popular, even for guests staying near our office in Caniço — many clients prefer to pay a modest fee and have the car brought directly to the hotel entrance.

Useful tip on timing
Choose the same pick-up and return time within office hours (09:00–18:00) and you avoid both location fees and the risk of an extra rental day. Our system works on a 24 + 1 hour formula: if you collect at 09:00 and return the next day at 10:00, you pay only for one 24-hour period.

Choosing the right size of car for the island

Madeira’s roads reward a car that is easy to place: narrow village streets, tight hairpins and parking spaces designed long before modern dimensions. A large SUV rarely earns its keep.

Our entire fleet is automatic because the combination of steep gradients, hairpins and stop-start village traffic makes an automatic genuinely useful. Most of our cars have efficient 1.0-litre turbo petrol engines (Nissan Micra 1.0, Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSI, Seat Arona 1.0 TSI). These turbos deliver more than enough torque for Madeira’s climbs and are practical, economical and easy to park. There are currently no diesel vehicles in our fleet.

If you prefer a little extra power reserve while staying in the same price band, choose the Mazda 2 1.5 Hybrid. It combines electric assistance with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and is offered at the same daily rates as the 1.0-litre models.

Every car in the fleet is equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (some models require a cable for connection). All cars shown on our website are real vehicles from our own fleet, photographed by us — no stock images. In 99 % of cases you receive exactly the car you selected.

Understanding what is included in the price

The headline daily rate rarely tells the whole story. At Girassol.Rent we keep everything visible in the online booking summary.

Insurance
Full insurance (€15 per day) is applied by default because it suits approximately 95 % of our clients. With full insurance there is no vehicle walk-around inspection at pick-up or return — the car is simply not your financial concern for bodywork, glass, tyres or underbody. You can switch during booking to:

  • Partial insurance (€10 per day), or
  • A refundable deposit of €500 instead of a daily premium (preferred by some experienced drivers).

Fuel policy
Full-to-full: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full.

Mileage
Unlimited mileage is standard at Girassol.Rent and one of our clear advantages. Other companies may apply limits; always check.

Advantages of a car rental company in Madeira

Young and additional drivers
A young-driver surcharge of €10 per day applies to drivers under 25. Adding an extra driver is a fixed one-time fee of €11.50, regardless of rental length.

Regional Usage Fee
Since 1 June 2026 every self-drive rental in Madeira carries a mandatory Regional Usage Fee of €2 per vehicle per full rental day, capped at 10 days (€20 maximum). It is calculated automatically on our website and shown clearly in the Summary section of your booking. Example: 2 days = €4, 6 days = €12, 15 days = €20. Full details:

Legislative decree: Diário da República.

Payment
15 % is paid online at the moment of booking to lock the car. The remaining 85 % is settled at collection by cash or card only.

Important restriction
Vehicles are for use on Madeira Island only. Taking a car to the mainland by ferry or any other means is not permitted.

The handover: what a smooth pick-up looks like at Girassol.Rent

We designed the process so that the only thing left on the day is to settle the balance and drive away.

1. Before you arrive
Your contract is already generated automatically the moment you confirm insurance online. All details — personal data, chosen cover, Regional Usage Fee — are pre-filled.

2. Meeting you
At the airport a colleague waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. At the office or hotel you are met at the agreed time.

3. Settling the balance (2–3 minutes)
Pay the remaining 85 % by cash or card on our mobile terminal.

4. Quick briefing
We briefly confirm the fuel policy and what your insurance covers. Because full insurance is the default for most clients, there is usually no formal damage inspection — the car is simply handed over.

5. Keys and you are on the road
Total time from arrival to driving off is typically 5–10 minutes. If anything feels unclear at any stage, just ask — or message +351 961 778 886 beforehand so everything is ready.

Returning the car

Returns are even quicker. Aim for a full tank (keep the receipt), arrive with a little buffer before your flight, and do a brief walk-around only if you did not take full insurance. Deposit release (if applicable) depends mainly on your bank and usually takes a few days to a few weeks.

Practical Information: checklist before you collect

FAQ

Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Depends on the issuing country. Most EU/EEA and current UK licences are accepted without one. Check a few weeks ahead if unsure — we can advise on +351 961 778 886.

What is the minimum / maximum age?
20–80 years at Girassol.Rent. A young-driver surcharge of €10 per day applies under 25.

Airport, hotel or office — which is better?
Airport if you want to leave immediately (€15 during working hours, €35 outside); office (free in working hours) if you are staying nearby; hotel delivery is a convenient paid option many guests choose.

Do I need an automatic?
Not strictly, but Madeira’s gradients and hairpins make automatic the practical choice. Our whole fleet is automatic; the 1.0-litre turbos cope easily, and the Mazda 2 Hybrid offers extra power at the same price. Every car also has Android Auto / Apple CarPlay.

How far ahead should I book?
6–10 weeks in peak periods, 1–3 weeks in quieter months. A 15 % prepayment locks your exact car. Maximum single-contract period is 90 days under Portuguese law, with extensions possible.

What is the Regional Usage Fee and is it visible online?
€2 per full day, maximum €20. On our site it is calculated automatically and shown in the Summary section of every booking — fully transparent.

How and when do I pay?
15 % online at booking, remaining 85 % at collection by cash or card only.

Is collection always free?
Only at our Caniço office during 09:00–18:00. Airport, hotel and other locations carry a location fee (see table above); out-of-hours adds a further surcharge. Both are shown before you confirm your booking.

Can I take the car off the island?
No. Vehicles are for use on Madeira only.

If you are still weighing up the details of your own trip — which car suits your route, what your insurance actually covers, or the exact cost for your dates and pick-up point — our team at Girassol.Rent is happy to talk it through before you book.
